*This is just about the inspiration and some fun facts so don't worry it's spoiler free*
Ever wondered where did those disturbing Titan's facial expressions from Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan) came from? Well, this is your answer:
Yep, that's a book about Human Facial Expressions.
In an interview with Nihon TV 's Zip! program, Hajime Isayama, the original Manga creator, talked about various details about his work and himself.
Isayama tells that the idea came to him while attending a drunk customer at an Internet café he worked for. He was amazed by his inability to establish communication with the drunk man even when the other person was a fellow human (that i presume spoke in the same language), and thought that the most familiar and scary animal in the world was indeed, the human.
He also tells that he used to live in a rural Japanese town surrounded by mountains and that one day he wanted to go beyond them, a reflection of the tall walls surrounding the cities in the manga, and Eren's wish to go outside the walls
Other interesting (and some fun) facts:
Isayama is a big fan of idol group Momoiro Clover Z , and when he is drawing a particularly painful/tragic scene in his manga, he thinks of his favourite idol group to raise his spirits.
- Is that thing behind you what i think it is??!!
He also spoke with Nihon TV 's Mirai Theater program, and told that he plans to finish Attack on Titan manga at 20 volumes which would mean the manga is just past half length (11 volumes, the 12th will be releasing in december), but of course that's just a goal so we have to wait for that one.
I wonder if the upcoming Spike Chunsoft 3DS game will feature something like this?
- Imagine a Titan with my face . . . . . . . . . . . . . . wait no, don't do that, that would be scary
Now out your best Titan face!!, no i'm kidding just hit the comments
Bonus: If you don't mind Japanese here's the Zip! interview
